Through the years, most of my coaches and motivational mentors have stressed the importance of WRITTEN GOALS, but I didn’t learn this secret until I met Brian Tracy.

The SECOND KEY TO CONTINUOUS INCREMENTAL IMPROVEMENT: Re-write your major goals daily.

I’ve written a lot about goal setting (and hope you’ll read those many posts), but for the purposes of this post, why don’t we just listen to the master himself:

Here’s a quick recap:  Each morning before you get out of bed or just before retiring at night – or maybe at both times – take your journal, write the date at the top of a new page, and write at least ten goals you would like to accomplish in the next year.  Use these four primary areas of life as your guide: Health and Fitness, Family and Personal, Business and Career, and Financial Independence.

  • Write each goal in the first person; i.e. “I”.
  • Write each goal in the present tense, as though it has already been achieved; e.g.” I have a net worth of $5 million”.
  • Write each goal using an active verb; e.g. I am, I earn, I weigh, I have and so on.
  • Write each goal as a positive statement; e.g. “I am free of nicotine” as opposed to “I do not smoke.”  You cannot motivate with a negative.
  • Write each goal with deadline; e.g. “I earn $500,000 by 12/31/2011.”
  • Write at least ten goals daily and more if you wish.

So, which of these goals, if you accomplished it in the next 24 hours would have the most positive impact on your life?  What are you waiting for…go do something that moves you closer to that goal!

I was encouraged from a young age to READ, when my mother insisted I read twice as many books as my teacher required.  And I believe to this day this is a large part of my continuing success.

Since then, I have heard practically the same message from almost every one of my motivational mentors, including Brian Tracy, Zig Ziglar, and Jim Rohn.  And in the following video, Tom Peters, discusses his strong belief in the necessity of reading for success.

So, the FIRST KEY TO CONTINUOUS INCREMENTAL IMPROVEMENT: Read every day for 30-60 minutes.  And be sure your reading materials motivate you, educate you and inspire you (thus ruling out the newspaper as a daily reading source).

Don’t like reading…feel your skills are a little rusty…then here are a few strategies to improve your reading skill and maximize your time spent reading:

  1. Always read with a purpose.  Before beginning a book, read the front/back covers and flaps, read the table of contents, maybe even read the first and last chapter to decide (a) if the book is really worth your investment of time and (b) exactly what knowledge you want to gain from reading the book.
  2. Always read with a highlighter or pen.  Underline/highlight the phrases that mean the most to you.  Then, if it is a book you decide to re-read in the future, you can more easily devour it by re-reading the highlighted parts.
  3. Finally, you will improve your reading by almost 20% when you slide your fingertips along underneath sentences as you read them.  This will help you focus and reduce the number of words that you re-read, therefore greatly increasing the speed at which you read.

What do you think it would do to your VALUE if you read for 30-60 minutes each day in 2011?

Increasing Value

Did you know that fully 95% of what you think, feel, do and achieve is the result of HABIT?  Habits you’ve been learning since childhood that lead you to react, often unthinkingly to situations in life.  The exciting thing is that all habits and skills are learned.  Therefore, new, good habits and skills can be learned through conscious practice and repetition…while, old, poor habits can be un-learned.  The KEY TO SUCCESS therefore is to LEARN AND PRACTICE SUCCESSFUL HABITS, ones you see other successful people doing.

Before sharing some of these habits with you, let me begin with a question: If you really wanted to, could you increase your your productivity and performance by 1/10th of 1% in the next 24 hours?  That is, could you find a way to work smarter and faster for the next 24 hour period, ulimately increasing your results by 1/1000?  I think we would all agree, the answer is a resounding YES!  I’m sure you have been thinking about doing something that you could do as soon as you finished reading this blog that would easily increase your performance by 1/10th of 1%.  Right?

And if you could do it for 1 day, could you do it for an entire work week…five whole days?  If you did, that 1/10th of 1% per day improvement would equal a 1/2% improvement at the end of that week.  And having done it for one week and experienced the benefits and momentum of increased productivity and performance, surely you would continue for the rest of the month, thus improving a total of 2% for that month.  And certainly, having experienced the gains of that first month, you would choose to continue improving each of the next 11 months and thus a full 26% that first year.  WOW!  What would it mean to your business and personal life if you improved by 26% in 2011?  Maybe it would be a 26% increase in profit or perhaps you would go home 2 hours early each day.

Continuing to improve 26% each year, compounded year by year means you would double your performance in less than 3 years.  And over a 10 year period, improving 1/10th of 1% per day (1/1000th), 26% per year, you would increase your productivity and performance by a WHOPPING 1009%.

As you can see, consistently increasing your value is not hard, it just requires discipline and successful habits.  Curious how to make CONTINUOUS, UNENDING IMPROVEMENT your mantra…check back tomorrow, when I will share the FIRST of 7 KEYS GUARANTEED TO INCREASE YOUR PRODUCTIVITY AND PERFORMANCE BY 1009% over the next 10 years!
